The Hymne à Sainte-Cécile, CG 557, is an instrumental work composed by Charles Gounod in 1865, written in honor of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music. The composition was originally scored for solo violin, harp, timpani, and wind instruments, or alternatively for violin, organ, and piano. Unlike Gounod’s St. Cecilia Mass (Messe solennelle de Sainte-Cécile), which is a large-scale choral and orchestral work, the Hymne is a smaller, purely instrumental piece. It is characterized by lyrical and expressive melodies, reflecting Gounod’s admiration for St. Cecilia and her association with music. The Hymne à Sainte-Cécile is more intimate in nature and serves as a contrast to the grandeur of the St. Cecilia Mass.

A piano arrangement of the work, S. 491, was made by Franz Liszt, who transcribed the piece for solo piano. Liszt’s version retains the expressive qualities of the original, offering a more intimate interpretation suitable for performance in smaller settings.
